Mahatma Gandhi was an Indian political and spiritual leader who played a prominent role in India's struggle for independence from British colonial rule. He was born on October 2, 1869, in Porbandar, a coastal town in present-day Gujarat, India, and died on January 30, 1948.
Gandhi is known for his philosophy of nonviolent resistance, which he called satyagraha, and his tireless efforts to achieve Indian independence through peaceful means. He believed in the power of civil disobedience, boycotts, and other forms of nonviolent protest to bring about social and political change.
Throughout his life, Gandhi led many successful campaigns of nonviolent resistance, including the Salt March of 1930, in which he and his followers walked 240 miles to the Arabian Sea to protest the British monopoly on salt production in India. He also worked tirelessly to promote Hindu-Muslim unity, fight against poverty and discrimination, and champion the rights of women.
Gandhi was a prolific writer and his collected works fill over 100 volumes. He was a deeply influential figure both in India and around the world, and his ideas and philosophy of nonviolence continue to inspire social and political movements to this day. Gandhi is also widely regarded as the Father of the Nation in India, and his birthday, October 2, is celebrated as a national holiday in India as Gandhi Jayanti.
